Living with a qiviut piece
How often to wash it, how to dry it, where to keep it, and what to do when something goes wrong.
A qiviut piece is not fragile in daily use, but it is not sheep's wool either. A few habits will keep it for a very long time.
Wash less than you think
Airing a scarf overnight removes most of what a wash would. Wash only when it is actually needed.
When you do, use cold water and a mild wool soap. No rubbing, no wringing, no warm water.
Dry flat, store folded
Press the water out in a towel and dry the piece flat, away from radiators. Never hang a wet knitted piece: the weight of the water will stretch it.
Store it folded in a drawer. Cedar or lavender keeps moths away without chemicals.
If something catches
A pulled loop is not a hole. Ease the yarn back along the row with a blunt needle rather than cutting it.
